Social Bookmarking Defined

One of the most important aspects of social media is social bookmarking, which is a setup wherein a user can store favorite web sites and links online, and publish these for consumption and reference by other people.

This activity takes roots in users posting web favorites online for the general public to see. The concept is strikingly simple, but the methods are not always easy. Today, though, social bookmarking is made easier by various web applications that can be used to store, organize and classify links. More importantly, users can share these with online contacts, who can in turn choose to add these links to their own bookmarks.

Social bookmarking has been refined such that users no longer have to understand Web markup in order to share favorites with friends and acquaintances online. It's as simple as clicking on a link to save an item into the system. Moreover, social bookmarking services have been adding functionality such that bookmarks can more easily be shared to either the public or a closed set of contacts.
